Remove your current home address and phone number from the internet

We recently had a car break-in where the thief stole my purse including my wallet car keys and around $200 of 3/4 full barely used makeup. Our insurance won’t cover anything since they have no one to go after. Okay fine whatever. In a search to see if the culprit is selling my stuff, I found a Kat Von D foundation listing in my color the next day. I called the police but they said that unless it had identifiable markers on it, “mirror broken in a specific corner, keychain on the keys, a specific smudge on the purse being sold” there really isn’t anything they can do about it.

The officer who helped me did mention that if they have my address and keys, I should change my locks on my car & home for safety reasons.

My driver’s license actually does not have my current address on it so I was not really worried, but I notified the people living there to be extra cautious.

Out of curiosity I googled my name just in case my address would pop up and I was horrified to find it there for free…on seven different websites.

I urge everyone to google themselves to see what pops up. I highly recommend that everyone takes the steps to remove their information from these websites for your personal safety and the safety of others. While it may be useful in finding long lost relatives or friends, it can also be scary if the information is abused for the worse. Here are the links to the different opt-out pages, some require email verification but all are free. It shouldn’t cost you anything to opt-out although it might require some email registering or phone number verification. All worth my piece of mind especially since there are websites out there that require payment to do this work for you.

WhitePages

White Pages is a pain in the butt because you have to create an account with them to take the information down but this was one of the first websites that popped up with my current address and everyone else’s information.

  1. Search your name and city/state on their main website http://www.whitepages.com
  2. In the results page, if you are able to “View Free Details” you’ll need to opt out.
  3. Right click save or CTRL C to copy the browser url.
  4. Open a new tab or go straight to https://secure.whitepages.com/me/suppressions
  5. Paste or CTRL V the URL from your details page & hit the green Opt Out Button
  6. If the information’s correct on this next page, hit the green Remove this info from WhitePages.
  7. Next page is a drop down menu of why you want the info removed, comment isn’t necessary. & hit the Next Step button.
  8. You’ll have to phone verify but then you’re done.
